In this issue we debunk the age-old myth of the Four Basic Food Groups.
The idea was that if you ate from four basic food groups (grains, dairy products, meats, fish, fruits and vegetables) you would be healthier. The main problem with this idea, aside from the fact that there were actually six food groups on the list—didn't that ever bother anyone besides me?—is, that it isn’t based on any thing except hype from some large Agra-Business Conglomerates that dominated the early 1900s. Another problem with is that there is no food group for minerals (which are basically little tiny rock particles that get absorbed into our bodies somehow, and are supposed to be good for us). Why isn’t there a "little tiny rocks food group?" A diet cola food group wouldn't hurt either. Luckily recent studies show that people today are actually healthier, stronger, taller, faster, smarter, more agile, with more endurance, more body mass, longer life spans and less down time, than people 100 years ago, even though, today, most of us never eat from the "four basic food groups." Today the only thing we eat is espresso, pea-nut candy bars and corn chips (although you may substitute one serving of microwave popcorn for one serving of corn chips). The amazingly thing is that these "foods" all fit neatly into one (or more) of what I call "The New Four Basic Food Groups." The new group is better than the old one, first of all, because there are only four groups on the list. They are: 1. Sweet things; 2. Salty things, 3. Crunchy things, and 4. Liquids. Unlike that old four basic food groups, the new one is based on real scientific evidence. Just eat from the New Four Basic Food Groups and you'll be healthy. Then, if you feel like eating some grains, or fresh fruits, go right ahead . . . But don't say we didn't warn you. -- Horace J. DigbyVisit Lexington Film, LLC Copyright © 2004 Lexington Film, LLC.
